Additional Information

Northern Spain has been welcoming travellers since medieval times when Santiago de Compostela was established. Now pilgrims still make their way to this scenic town. You can follow this holy route or ‘Camino’ as the Spaniards say, from the comfort of our coach. You can admire the scenery lined with natural beauty and diverse architecture before exploring the delightful towns along the Bay of Biscay. Roman ruins mingle with Galician palaces and the beauty of this unspoiled region is magnified by its peace and tranquillity.

DAY 1 On this later start holiday we depart home area approximately midday and travel to Portsmouth. Here we board the Brittany Ferry for our overnight sailing to Santander, Spain. Enjoy a relaxing night on board one of their luxury ferries. Get into the holiday mood whilst exploring the stylish lounges, tuck into a delicious meal in one of the restaurants (price not included), visit the cinema or take a dip in the pool before retiring to relax in our comfortable, private cabin (please note: there is an upgrade option if you would like to stay in an outside cabin with a port hole, subject to availability and extra supplement).
DAY 2 The crossing from Portsmouth to Santander takes approx. 24 hours, so today we will be on board our mini-cruise. Snacks and light meals are available in the many bars and cafes. The choice of on board activities is exceptional - there are cinemas showing the latest releases, a swimming pool and leisure area, as well as a range of shops and lounges to explore.
There is plenty to do but also plenty of places to curl up in comfort and relax with a book or magazine. We recommend that an early evening meal is purchased on the ferry today. At approx. 5pm, we disembark at Santander and travel to the Tryp Hotel León (approx. 3.5 hrs driving time). This will be our hotel for the next 2 nights.
DAY 3 After breakfast this morning we start a guided tour of León which celebrates the best of Spanish drama and culture. Only Spain could make a bank interesting and Gaudi’s Casa Botines is testament to this, infused with a medieval air and numerous neo-Gothic characteristics. However, it is the 10th century cathedral with imposing towers and gothic influences that truly astounds. There are many restaurants in this city for lunch to be purchased. Return to the hotel later for our evening meal.
DAY 4 After breakfast we check out of this hotel make our way from León to O Grove via the Roman citadel of Ponferrada, which is the last major town before Santiago de Compostela. Visit the 12th century polygonal castle Castillo de los Templarios which acted as a haven on the route for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. On arrival at Hotel Bosque Mar we can relax with our welcome drink of sangria followed later by our evening meal. We have unlimited house wine and
mineral water with our evening meals at this hotel.

DAY 5 After breakfast we follow in the footsteps of millions of pilgrims as we arrive in Santiago de Compostela. Enjoy a guided walking tour of Santiago de Compostela and the glorious Romanesque cathedral, which soars above the city, before enjoying time at leisure. There is a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants, many specialising in fine Galician seafood and local wines. Return to the hotel later for our evening meal.
DAY 6 Today we enjoy a day at leisure. It’s our driver’s day off so why not relax in the charming municipality of O Grove. Once an island, it now stands proudly on the mouth of the Arousa estuary.
DAY 7 After breakfast we take a guided tour of Pazo de Rubianes where history meets nature in a Galacian palace, flourishing with rose-pink camellias, glossy eucalyptus, japonica and cork oaks. It’s a treat for the eyes and a feast for the taste-buds. Here lies the most extensive vineyard in the region of Salnés and we’ll be able to taste the distinctly fruity Albariño
white wine and learn about its cultivation. On the way back to the hotel we will stop at Cambados for free time. Stroll beneath the stone arches that once guarded the town and discover the plaza which is a proud part of the Galician architectural tradition, as are the traditional granite houses.
DAY 8 After breakfast we check out of the hotel and make the interesting journey from O Grove to Gijón. We will follow the coast along the Bay of Biscay and see a wealth of archaeological sites from the 1st and 4th centuries including some impressive Roman Baths. We will also make a stop at A Coruña for a guided tour. Legends surround the soaring
Greco-Roman Tower of Hercules which welcomes colourful boats into the bustling harbour. We arrive at the Abba Playa Hotel, Gijon, with time to freshen up before our evening meal.
DAY 9 After breakfast we check out of the hotel. From Gijón we make our way to the Picos de Europa which are the highest peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains. We then continue on to Santander for our overnight sailing to Plymouth (please note: meals on the ferry are not included).
DAY 10 After breakfast on board (price not included) we spend the day at leisure sailing to Plymouth. Upon arrival at Plymouth (approx. 5pm) we disembark the ferry and return to home area, making suitable comfort stops along the way. Please be advised that we arrive back to home area approx. midnight.
