Additional Information

DAY 1 Travel to Leeds making suitable comfort stops along the way, including a stop in Grantham for lunch to be purchased. We arrive at the hotel where we have a cup of tea/coffee on arrival followed later by our evening meal.

DAY 2 After breakfast travel to Ashfield Farm. Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb is an out of season rhubarb that is first grown outsidef or a period of two years so that the exposure to frost toughens the roots. Once in the darkened sheds, heat is applied causing the rhubarb to grow quickly in search of light. The Rhubarb is harvested by candle light to maintain the tenderness of the shoots and ensure that growth continues. The visit starts with refreshments of tea/coffee/biscuits served on arrival in the lecture theatre. After hearing about the history of rhubarb we then go into the forcing sheds to discuss the process and how it all works, and if we listen - we might just hear them growing! (Warm clothing and firm footwear is advisable for this tour). There will be time to purchase fresh forced rhubarb at low farm prices here before enjoying free time in Leeds this afternoon. There are many shops as well as cafes and restaurants for lunch to be purchased. This compact city centre is a shopper’s paradise. Wonderfully diverse, Leeds combines quirky boutiques with high-end luxury and the big high street brands. Shopping in the city isn’t complete without a visit to Leeds historic Kirkgate Market, part of which is a Grade I listed building dating from 1875; it is one of the largest covered markets in Europe. Kirkgate Market is also where Marks & Spencer was born - Michael Marks opened his Penny Bazaar there in 1884. Plus, on the first and third Sunday of every month, Briggate plays host to the Farmers and Craft Market; fresh, organic produce and lots of craft supplies. Return to the hotel for our evening meal.

DAY 3 After breakfast return to home area with suitable comfort stops along the way. Spend time in Stamford for lunch to be purchased before arriving back late afternoon/early evening.
