Yorkshires Steam & Summer Wine

On this fabulous holiday we travel through lavish landscapes that have been the inspiration for writers, artists, and filmmakers over the years, by steam. We chuff through dramatic Yorkshire scenery on both the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, take a relaxing cruise along the Leeds and Liverpool canal and enjoy entertaining and tasteful guided tours at Ripley Castle and Holmfirth Vineyard.

Day 1

We head to Yorkshire making suitable comfort stops including a lunch stop in Newark. Arrive at our hotel with time to freshen up before our evening meal.

Day 2

This morning, our day begins with a 30-minute journey through the scenic Yorkshire Dales on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway before enjoying free time for lunch in the charming market town of Skipton. This afternoon we watch the world drift by on a relaxing 1-hour narrow boat cruise along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal through the picturesque Pennine countryside with tea and coffee served on board.

Day 3

This morning we visit Ripley Castle set in magnificent grounds on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We take a guided tour of the house where a history full of romance, courage, loyalty, and recklessness is brought to life. We then enjoy a delicious cream tea before heading to the Victorian spa town of Harrogate for time to purchase lunch. This afternoon we embark on a steam trip through Bronte country on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway - look out for the station which boasted a starring role in the film The Railway Children.

Day 4

We spend a leisurely morning exploring the sleepy small town of Holmfirth nestled in the valley, surrounded by spectacular fells. Known as the location for Last of the Summer Wine, you will recognise familiar spots such as Sid’s Cafe and Nora Batty’s Steps. Afterwards we take a fascinating tour of Holmfirth Vineyard to discover its colourful history, learn about the wine making process from vine to bottle and sample the wares! We savour a sparkling afternoon tea as we soak up the panoramic view across the vineyard and surrounding Peak District National Park.

Day 5

After breakfast, we make our way home stopping in medieval Lichfield, with plenty of restaurants and historic streets lined with shops to browse.
