Join us on this fabulous long weekend break visiting the gorgeous locations you see in some of the TV detective programmes. Featuring a visit to Blenheim Palace, a boat trip and a walking tour of Oxford!

Day 1

Depart home area and travel to Henley on Thames, one of the most beautiful towns in England, for lunch to be purchased. Henley’s riverside location, surrounded by a Chiltern landscape of wooded hills and green fields, lends itself to relaxation, hearty lunches and quirky shopping. Afterwards we visit nearby Wallingford, a beautiful Oxfordshire Market town situated on the River Thames. Wallingford has a strong presence in murder mystery fiction. Agatha Christie (who is buried at nearby Cholsey) lived and worked in Wallingford, taking influence from local landmarks and residents in Winterbrook stories such as Miss Marple. More recently, Wallingford is the location of Causton in the TV series Midsomer Murders. Many of the series’ extras herald from Wallingford. Time here to purchase afternoon refreshments and to look around the many independent shops and absorb the ambience of this lovely town before departing for our hotel with time to freshen up before your evening meal.

Day 2

After breakfast travel through the beautiful Chiltern Hills to Blenhiem Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. See the State Rooms with their priceless collections of portraits, tapestries and furniture. Discover the unique history of the Formal Gardens, reflecting a journey through the styles of the ages. Blenheim Palace has been used for films such as James Bond Spectre, Cinderella, Mission Impossible Rougue, and the Royals. There are cafes on site for lunch to be purchased today.

Day 3

Today we travel to Abingdon for our included boat trip along the Thames to Oxford. As you cruise along the Thames you will see lots of wildlife on the riverbanks and see some beautiful scenery. Upon arrival in Oxford, enjoy free time to purchase lunch before meeting a guide for an included 1-hour walking tour of the city. The streets and side streets of Oxford, combined with the iconic college buildings and their inhabitants, inspired Colin Dexter to make Oxford the base for his Inspector Morse series. The Randolph Hotel featured heavily both in the series and for Dexter in real life, where he could be found perched at the end of the bar or by the fireside. The bar was renamed after his main character, Morse. Thanks to Endeavour, and Lewis and Inspector Morse before it, the city has become a byword for murderous academia and old-fashioned pubs. Opportunity to buy a drink in the White Horse where his younger self, Endeavour, took a ruminative pint with a beautiful murderous opera singer in the series’ successful pilot!

Day 4

Depart for home area and visit Windsor for time at leisure. Crowned by stunning Windsor Castle, this is the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world and the Queen’s favourite weekend home. There are some wonderful independent retailers as well as top high street names and international brands, as well as plenty of cafes and restaurants for lunch to be purchased. Opportunity to visit Windsor Great Park where Thunderbirds, Harry Potter, Midsomer Murders, Miss Marple, Bridget Jones Baby and Goodbye Christopher Robin have all been filmed.
