Zundert, the Liberation Flower Parade

Founded in 1936, Bloemencorso Zundert has grown to become the largest flower parade in the world! It takes place on the first Sunday every September and has transformed into a massive spectacle with giant, fantastical floats built by local residents, each competing to be crowned champion of the year. Thousands of flowers are used to decorate the floats into the elaborate displays we see - uniquely only dahlias are ever used, with over 600,000 grown locally just to be used in the parade!

Day 1

Depart home area cross by ferry to France, heading towards our hotel in the Netherlands, we stop in Ypres for lunch. Ypres has many cafes and restaurants to choose from and we could also try some of the world-famous Belgian chocolates! We will find different chocolate confectioners on the market square. We continue to our hotel and arrive with time to freshen up before our evening meal.

Day 2

Visit the Zundert Flower Parade today. Originally to honour Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday with modest horse-drawn floats and decorated bicycles, it has since grown into a massive spectacle with giant, fantastical floats built by residents of 20 hamlets around Zundert who compete to be crowned champion for the year. The floats are interspersed with marching troupes and bands. The side streets are filled by a huge street market selling everything from tulip bulbs to waffles.

Day 3

After breakfast return to Calais for the Eurotunnel crossing to Folkestone, stopping in Ostend for lunch to be purchased. Ostend is a popular seaside town with many shops and cafes. Arrive back to home area early evening.
