Day 1

We head to our overnight hotel on the boarders of Scotland making suitable comfort stops along the way including somewhere suitable to purchase lunch. Arrive at the hotel in Gretna with time to freshen up before our evening meal.

Day 2

After breakfast we check out and travel to Scotland. This afternoon we visit The Famous Grouse Experience at the Glenturret Distillery. After seeing the milling, mashing, fermenting and distilling process visitors are introduced to one of The Famous Family of whiskies to sample as well as tasting The Glenturret Highland Single Malt. There is a café/restaurant on site where light lunches, meals and snacks are served. We arrive at the Highlander Hotel late afternoon in time to relax before our evening meal which includes a small glass of wine.

Day 3

After breakfast we travel by coach for a journey to Kyle of Lochalsh situated on the west coast of Scotland, through some breath-taking scenery via Laggar, Roybridge, Laggan, Ivergarry, Ratagan, and Invershiel. There will be free time in the Kyle of Lochalsh to purchase lunch and take in the wonderful views across to the spectacular Isle of Skye before boarding our train to Inverness. The views from the window on this impressive 80-mile journey are worth the fare alone. Pass along the southern bank of the Beauly Firth, we will continue on our route passing wild mountain scenery, lochs, glorious dramatic rocky shores and even the location for the TV series Hamish Macbeth, Plockton. Our coach awaits us at Inverness to return us back to the hotel for our evening meal.

Day 4

After breakfast we begin in Aviemore and travel back in time on the Strathspey Steam Railway. At the start of our journey we are treated to the stunning backdrop of the Cairngorms Mountains as we head off North East on our 10-mile journey, taking in glorious views of heather-clad moors, the ancient Caledonian forest and the fast-flowing Spey River before we reach Broomhill. Visit the delightful Grantown on Spey, set in the Cairngorm National Park, for lunch to be purchased before travelling via coach to Baxters Highland Village, Fochabers. Baxters shop is stocked with the complete range of Baxters and Audrey Baxter food products (over a hundred in total!), and their other speciality food hall offers a wide range of delicious foods sourced locally and from across Scotland. Their alcohol shop has an extensive range of Scottish gins, whiskies, and local craft beers. They also offer a large selection of cookware and gift items. Visit the museum and "Old Shop" to step back in time through 150 years and four generations of the Baxters story with the film show. We then make our way back to the hotel for our evening meal.

Day 5

After breakfast travel to Fort William for time at leisure. Boasting one of the most enviable settings in all of Scotland, this town lies in the shadows of the gigantic Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain measuring a huge 1,345m. The high street is at the heart of the town and is home to some cosy traditional pubs where we can perhaps enjoy a flavoured Highland single malt. Indulge in the local delicacies at shops, cafes and restaurants for lunch. This afternoon we have our third and final rail journey on the Jacobite Steam Railway, described as the greatest railway journey in the world, which takes us on a 42-mile return stretch of the wonderful West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig. We travel along the bank of Loch Eil before experiencing the iconic curve of the Glenfinnan Viaduct’s magnificent 21 arches. After enjoying the stark beauty of Lochs Eilt, Ailort and Nan Uamh, we have spectacular views of the Isle of Skye. We disembark the train in Mallaig where we can soak up the spectacular views across the harbour. Then, return via coach to the hotel where we are served our evening meal.

Day 6

After breakfast we check out of our main stay hotel and head back to the boarder for our overnight stay, visiting Stirling on route for lunch to be purchased. We arrive at our overnight hotel ready for our evening meal.

After breakfast we travel back to home area making suitable comfort stops along the way as well as allowing time for lunch to be purchased.

HIGHLANDER HOTEL, NEWTONMORE ***

The Highlander is situated in the picturesque village of Newtonmore in the Scottish Highlands. This 3-star hotel consists of 2 main areas - the public areas and the area where the bedrooms can be found. All bedrooms are located opposite (externally) to the public areas. Although the hotel does not have a lift, many of the bedrooms are on the ground floor.
